The main cabinet.The Department of Physics welcomes its new IBM SP2 supercomputer. The system has 24 processors, 24 Gb or RAM, and more than half a terabyte of disk space. We will keep it in the Information Systems building where it will have 24 hour generator backup.
The SP2 will be used to solve computational physics problems, including simulations of colliding black holes, the structure of molecules and solids, phase changes, and particle creation in the early universe.
