October, 2001

Three WFU students accompanied Assistant Professor Jeremy Qualls to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. Undergraduate students Arthur Carter and Yumi Okuyama and graduate student Lu Peng were all able to participate and contribute in solid state physics research. Students had full control over the experiments, including utilizing a 33 Tesla magnet system and temperatures down to 1.4 Kelvin. For those unfamiliar with magnetic fields, 1 Tesla is 10,000 gauss and the strength of the magnetic field of the Earth is approximately 0.5 gauss.

Students examined not only exciting electronic materials synthesized by leading authorities in the field, but also samples that the students had synthesized at WFU. The results were very promising, revealing new and very interesting magnetic and electronic properties.
